Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA): A Coffin Club Guide
Because being organised is cool!
What Is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you (the donor) choose someone you trust (your attorney) to make decisions on your behalf if you ever lose the ability to do so.
And no — it’s not about handing someone else the right to take over your life when you’re perfectly fine. It only kicks in when you lose capacity (think: dementia, a serious accident, illness, or being just gaga enough that you can’t make clear financial or medical decisions for yourself).
It’s not just for older people. Accidents, illnesses, strokes, neurological stuff — all sorts of things can leave someone temporarily or permanently unable to make decisions.
Having an LPA means you decide who steps in, not the courts.
